Home to different fun activities for the whole family, Discovery Park in Sacramento, California, has been the go-to place for locals and tourists searching for various recreational activities. The 302-acre park boasts of featuring activities such as trail boating, cycling, hiking, picnic, archery and other fun-filled activities for kids and adults to enjoy.
However, among many music lovers and fans, Discovery Park’s name is synonymous with music festivals as it famously holds one of the biggest music festivals in the country: Monster Energy’s Aftershock Festival. Undoubtedly for any metalhead, Sacramento’s famous park, has become a reputable venue for epic events and concerts. Big bands like Metallica, Rise Against, Avenged Sevenfold, Blink 182, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Sum 41, and Korn, among many others, have already performed in this renowned concert venue.
It was in June of 2000 that Discovery Park was first used as a concert site for a one-night rock concert featuring six bands, including Splender and Stroke 9. The warm reception of both concertgoers and Rock fans brought Discovery Park’s reputation as a decent venue for mega concert events and festivals. Thus, it was no surprise to everyone why it was chosen to stage the Aftershock Festival in 2012. Since then, Discovery Park has been the go-to place for rock and heavy metal fans for the annual Aftershock Festival.
Over the years, the one-day event expanded to three (3) days to accommodate thousands of fans, not only in California and the United States but from all over the globe. The world of Metal Rock has seen this festival grow from a one-night concert of (eight) 8 acts played in front of around 12,500 people in 2012 to a 4-night concert festival with over 30 acts performing in front of 23,000 fans daily in 2021 — making it undoubtedly California’s Biggest Rock Festival.
“People are coming to Sacramento from all over the world for this event. According to the ZIP code report for tickets sales, 10 people from London bought tickets, 500-plus from Canada, 71 from Chile, 8 from Costa Rica, 8 from Moscow, 62 from Hawaii, and 66 from New Jersey. Almost every state in the union is represented.”

This statement from the Visit Sacramento chief operating officer shows the success of the Aftershock Festival and its economic impact on the city. The most recent Aftershock Festival in 2021 revealed that about 70% of people who attended came from outside the region, and 50% came from outside California. Thus, Aftershock is slowly gaining a reputation as a leading international rock festival.
This year’s Monster Energy’s Aftershock Festival is set for October 6-9, 2022 (Thursday – Sunday). This 4-day event will feature an epic lineup of all-star bands and promising new ones. The festival will be headlined by Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Dropkick Murphys, Sum 41, and Blink-182.
Like Metallica, Slipknot has performed in the festival several times, a classic favourite among metalheads and has become a household name for Aftershock. Blink-182, Rob Zombie, Bring Me The Horizon and other late 90’s and early 2000’s bands, on the other hand, will absolutely make millennial fans all over the world excited as they return to the concert scene after being out of the road for a few years.
Like the previous year, many concertgoers are excited for some surprise appearances this year. The alternative metal band Mudvayne returned in 2021 after a 12-year hiatus and was warmly received by dedicated fans. It is also rumoured that My Chemical Romance and Limp Bizkit will return in this year’s Aftershock after cancelling their participation in 2021.
Other big names that will grace the event are Lamb Of God, Bring Me The Horizon, Marilyn Manson, TOOL, Korn, A Day To Remember, and many more. With all these big bands coming together with the relatively new ones, the lineup will surely gather both old and new fans and will absolutely make them scream at the top of their lungs.
